Gosport Marine Futures

May 2019: Gosport Marine Scene is proud to announce that 16 young people from the local area will again get the chance to take part in a one week sailing adventure during the summer. No experience is necessary but you must have an interest in watersports and be willing to do your best! You will live on board Discovery for the week (pictured) and work as a team to set the sails, plot the course and steer the ship. You’ll also need to take a full part in cooking and keeping the boat tidy and shipshape. This isn’t a cruise – expect to work hard but have lots of fun and feel a sense of achievement.

Gosport Marine Futures is funded by Gosport Marine Scene (part of Portsmouth Harbour Marine) whose aim is to encourage more local young people onto the water. As part of the programme you may be asked to talk about the experience at school or help recruit future team members.

To take part, you must be between 14 and 17 years old and available either from 27th July to 2nd August 2019 or from the 15th to 21st August 2019. Please complete the application form and include contact details of an adult who knows you well (not a family member) who we can ask about your suitability for the programme.

After your voyage, there will be opportunities to take part in vessel maintenance, learn about jobs available in the maritime sector, or get involved with a local sailing club. You may even gain a recognised RYA sailing qualification. No previous sailing experience is required as you will be taught everything you need to know.

Last year’s participants have continued sailing, some have trained up to watch leader level which means they have started taking responsibility, some have helped in winter maintenance gaining useful skills and some have planned to undertake maritime work experience. So don’t delay, apply now for your chance to set sail!

Applications for 2019 are now open and close on 21st June 2019. Please contact [email protected] with any questions.
